Any time we could include a visit to Aunt June and Uncle Fred and family during a trip from eastern Ontario would make my brother David, my sister Beverley and I smile...theirs was always such a nuts but fun household! Uncle Fred would often tire us kids out with a walk around the block, his idea of a "block" being the local concession roads...usually 5 miles or more! Growing up, the annual family get-togethers at Mikisew Provincial Park and later Bon Echo were the highlight of the summer. I remember well seeing the 5 of them arrive for 2 weeks of camping crowded into their Volkswagen beetle, complete with canoe on the roof and Labrador retriever in the boot! Usually Fred's sisters and their families and June's sisters and entourage were there too, making 6 or 8 families all camped in close proximity, sharing meals, crowding around someone's fire every night. With cousins the numbers would often swell to 30 or more, quite a crew! Uncle Fred was always the life of any party or family function, entertaining us kids for hours in the lake, walking the trails, or teaching us about nature.. Great memories! He will truly be missed by many... Hope the canoeing is good where you are now!
